According to Security Researcher Tobias Boelter, WhatsApp’s data can be intercepted by Whatsapp and its owner company Facebook.
A security vulnerability was found that could allow Facebook and others to intercept the messages of people. “This is a huge threat to privacy and freedom of speech”, says Privacy Campaigners. If asked by Government, Whatsapp can produce our messaging details to the Government which is a huge breach of privacy of a citizen.
Facebook claimed that no one can intercept WhatsApp’s messages, not even the company and its staff, ensuring complete privacy for its billion-plus users. But new research showed that the company could itself read messages due to the way WhatsApp has implemented its end-to-end encryption protocol.
WhatsApp’s end-to-end encryption relies on the generation of unique security keys developed by Open Whisper Systems. The research claim that without letting the user(sender & receiver) know, WhatsApp has the ability to generate a new encryption key for the offline recipient.
The recipient is not made aware of this change in encryption, while the sender is only notified if they have opted into encryption warning in settings. This re-encryption and rebroadcasting effectively allow WhatsApp to intercept and read users’ messages.
The flaw is not in the ‘Signal’ protocol. The main cause of this flaw is the way Signal protocol is implemented in WhatsApp.
Security researcher Boelter asserted that “using the retransmission vulnerability, the WhatsApp server can snoop and get a copy of the whole conversation, not just a single message.”
Boelter reported the vulnerability to Facebook in April 2016, but was told that Facebook was aware of the issue, that it was “expected behavior” and wasn’t being actively worked on.
Although this flaw cannot be used by any outside person, but only by WhatsApp and its owner Facebook. No matter how much they try to assure us on our privacy and rights, they always have our messaging details and they can sell them to anyone privately who give them big bucks.
Yaa.. We should be worried, it is the matter of our privacy, our rights to speech and express ourselves. We hope this flaw in Whatsapp’s implementation of design will be corrected soon. Although this problem was highlighted a long time back in April last year. But no action has been taken till now.
